Investigation and analysis of scientifically incorrect points in high school students’ writing achievements who are participating in the Osaka University SEEDS program

This article presents the results of an investigation into “scientifically incorrect points” in the written work of students participating in the Osaka University SEEDS program. The SEEDS Program is an educational initiative aimed at fostering excellence in Science, Technology, and Mathematics (STEM) among middle school students. Since 2015, the program has delivered university-level lectures, discussions, and lab experiences to approximately 140 selected students every year. As part of the program, SEEDS students are tasked with writing 3000-character essays at home after attending the lectures. This article analyzed the weaknesses observed in these essays to identify academic writing challenges commonly faced by students at the secondary education stage. The findings revealed that these weak points could be categorized into six groups: issues with quantitative reasoning, objectivity, definition of terms, inclusion of writers’ values, expression of personal opinions where inappropriate, and other issues. Developing targeted education materials to address these challenges is anticipated to enhance writing instruction for secondary school students.
