The purpose of this paper is to consider ‘co-creation among society and academia’(in Japanese ‘Shagaku Kyoso’) and ‘living together’ (in Japanese ‘Kyosei’) through school education. In doing so, it develops a discussion using the Life Orientation textbooks and teacher’s guides from the Republic of South Africa as examples. In this paper, based on the results of an analysis of the descriptions in the textbooks and teacher’s guides for the 10th and 11th grades of the upper secondary education level of the subject, the following points are mainly pointed out. First of all, in the units on ‘Democracy and Human Rights’ and ‘Social and Environmental Responsibility’ in the subject, learners learn the issues of local and global society and the environment, learning about ‘human rights’, ‘diversity’, ‘dignity’ and ‘respect’ when ‘living together’ with others (these are the elements related to the concept of ‘living together’), and through ‘cooperation’ with organisations outside of school that have knowledge and experience, and ‘working together’ (these are the elements related to the concept of ‘co-creation among society and academia’), this paper points out that the teaching and learning contents are set to address these issues. Next, this paper indicates that, in tackling such issues, there is an emphasis on learners as ‘ordinary people’ in ‘civil society’ demonstrating their skills. In addition, this paper points out the importance of the concept of ‘human dignity’ in the textbooks and teacher’s guides for the 10th grade and consider how it is an important element in discussions of ‘co-creation among society and academia’ and ‘living together’ in modern Japanese society and international cooperation.
