Palace Poems (Gongci) depicting court life began in the Middle Tang with Wang Jian (?-830?), who wrote one hundred Gongci, followed by the poetry of Lady Huarui of the Five Dynasties Shu Kingdom (907-965). Chen Shidao (1053-1101) of the Northern Song stated, “Emulating Wang Jian, Lady Huarui composed one hundred Gongci.” What was the extent of this influence, and what characteristics do Lady Huarui’s Palace Poems exhibit? By comparing the Gongci of Wang Jian and Lady Huarui and highlighting respective differences through flower, horse, and emperor motifs, this article aims to shed light on Lady Huarui’s representation of court women, residing deep in the palace and serving the emperor.
