抄録	I researched the designs belonging to the Rinpa School found on the maki-e, or powder-sprinkled lacquer, listed in auction catalogues. I analyzed the patterns assembled from approximately 2000 auction catalogues. This enabled me to find out what was often used from the late Edo period to the Taisho era. Designs of deer, crane, from the Eight Bridges, iris and funabashi bridge and boat were, in that order, the most popular. This shows a preference for literature related motifs. Noh songs were also popular as there were many designs referencing Bai Juyi and the sano no watari zu. These patterns seem to be reproduced from design collections published in the late part of Edo period. Some designs were also reproduced from Yamamoto Shunshō’s shunshō hyakuzu (One Hundred Selections from Shunshō). There were some korin maki-e, identified by the inscription for Korin. These were also recorded in the design collections, and they might have originated from Korin’s production atelier directly. Many maki-e bore the characters for Koetsu. I think there are trends in the auction catalogues. The auction catalogues published during the Showa period display more generic designs. As such, it is harder to identify their production years. The works were copied designs out of design collections into easily. As a result they were losing their essence.
