Abstract	This study re-examines the peace efforts of John Leighton Stuart, president of Yenching University in Japanese-occupied Beijing, during the Second Sino-Japanese War from 1937 to 1941, a period before Japan and the United States entered into conflict. The research question is: “How did Stuart’s peace efforts unfold during the Second Sino-Japanese War?” By utilizing personal letters, government documents, memoirs, and diaries, this study examines Stuart's interactions with Japan, the United States, and China, illustrating the unique peace-promoting activities of this American while safeguarding Yenching University. The findings suggest that, driven by Stuart's unique identity and ideology, his series of activities to preserve Yenching University, promote peace, and enhance Sino-Japanese-American relations constituted a distinctive "Stuart-style" approach to peace efforts. Consequently, direct peace negotiations involving Chiang Kai-shek were merely one part of Stuart's numerous wartime efforts to promote peace, and he did not regard them as his primary or formal tasks. However, as an educator, civilian diplomat, and Christian, Stuart integrated his internationalist beliefs, Christian principles, and the national interests of Japan, the United States, and China into his actions, shaping his unique role in promoting peace during the war.
