Abstract
This paper discusses the classification of the Japanese additive conjunction ‘soshite’. Previous studies have generally categorized its usage based on the relationship between the preceding and subsequent sentences, identifying sequential addition, causal addition, and parallel addition as typical usages. However, this paper examines how certain situations are perceived as a unified whole and classifies all variations of ‘soshite’ additions into five distinct types: (A) Adding a result to a process, (B) Adding a purpose to a method, (C) Adding a measure to an achievement goal, (D) Adding a natural consequence to a general premise, (E) Adding situations that form a set or pair. This classification provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the diverse functions of ‘soshite’ in Japanese.
