Abstract
In my article "The emergence of 'laughing photos' - The role of the magazine 'Nico-Nico'" ('Japan Studies' No. 61, International Research Center for Japanese Studies, November 2020), I introduced the magazine 'Nico-Nico', which was published in 1911 by the “Nico-Nico Club” played a major role in helping Japanese people take pictures with smiles. However, the circumstances under which this magazine was published remained a mystery for a long time. This is because the history is not written in the first issue. This paper clarified this point. First, journalist Yumi Aoyagi introduced in 1909 in “Jitsugyo no Nippon” that a club whose credo was to put a smile on America's face was established, and that this movement had become a major movement. When Kozan Kuroda, a children's literature writer, saw this, he appealed in the magazine “Shonen Sekai” to create such a club in Japan. He even published a fantasy novel-like story about how this was realized in Japan. Fudo Savings Bank director Matsunaga Bintaro read them and suggested the establishment of such a club to the bank's president, Motojiro Makino, and on February 11, 1911, the ”Nico-Nico Club'' was established. At the same time, the magazine ”Nico Nico'' was used to encourage and spread the movement. This paper discusses this process in detail while introducing actual materials.
