Abstract
The Garden of Love (Gulšan-e-‘Išq) is a Romance (Masnavī) written in Dakani Urdu by Nuṣratī, a court poet of the Bijapur Kingdom in the 17th century Deccan, India. This romance deals with young Prince Manhar’s quest for Princess Madmālatī, whom he saw in his dream. Manhar’s adventure contains a lengthy list of regions and countries of the world, as well as descriptions of climatic zones (iqlīm) and wondrous phenomena experienced in them. Presumably, these descriptions of wonders in the world are inspired by the so-called ‘Wonder Literature’ (‘Ajā’ib Literature), the genre of natural histories, which were widely produced in the Islamicate world from the 12th to the 13th century.
