Song-gaoseng-zhuan 宋高僧伝 (The Biography of the High Priests of the Song Dynasty) is a successor to Xu-gaoseng-zhuan 続高僧伝 (The Biography of the High Priests of the Tang Dynasty) written by Daoxuan 道宣 in late 7th century, who was an eminent monk of Tang Dynasty, that was compiled by ZhanNing 賛寧 in the 7th year of Taiping-xingguo 太平興国 (982), submitted to the Emperor in the 1st year of Duangong 端拱 (988), and revised in the 2nd year of Zhidao 至道 (996). It contains biographies of monks from the Tang Dynasty to the early Northern Song Dynasty, and is an essential text for studying the history of Buddhism during this period, but its historical reliability has frequently been questioned. The other work, Guang-qingliang-zhuan 広清涼伝 (The Expanded Book of Mount Qingliang) was written by Yanyi 延一 of Zhenrongyuan 真容院 in the fifth year of Jiayou 嘉祐 (1060), and was completed in three months. The name “Qingliang 清涼” refers to Mount Seiryo, whose another name is Mount Wutai 五台山. Since the Tang Dynasty, it has been the center of Chinese Buddhism as the mountain where Manjushri 文殊菩薩 resides. Guang-qingliang-zhuan is a collection of the stories of Mount Wutai, the miracles that occurred there, and the biographies of the monks who lived and practiced there. It is called Guang-qingliang-zhuan because it is an expanded version of Qingliang-zhuan 清涼伝 (The Book of Mount Qingliang). It is often used as a basic text for research on the history of Buddhism on Mount Wutai from the Tang Dynasty to the early Northern Song Dynasty. There are 18 monks who have biographies in both books. A closer look at their descriptions reveals that 17 of these biographies are very similar in storyline, idioms and phrases used by both, and even Chinese characters. This similarity can be explained by the fact that Zanning and Yanyi used the same materials, or even materials of the same group ― namely materials with differences in description due to additions or corrections made to the original materials and errors made during transcription. In addition, Guang-qingliang-zhuan takes the position that the five dynasties and Northern Song Dynasty which occupied Zhongyuan 中原, Plains in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River, were legitimate, and considers the regimes that opposed them to be “illegitimate 偽,” and omits the interaction between the monarchs of the illegitimate regimes and the monks of Mount Wutai. Considering these two historical facts, in addition to the fact that Guang-qingliang-zhuan is expanded with stories passed down by the elders in the mountain and Lingjiji 霊跡記 (the Collected Stories about Sacred Places in Mount Wutai), and that it was written in a short period of three months, Song-gaosengzhuan should be regarded as the primary source when studying the monks of Mount Wutaishan.
