In order to maintain a democratic and communal society, people must trust each other and behave prosocially. Therefore, this study examined the social background of prosocial behavior. Based on previous sociological theories and empirical studies, we analyzed the above agenda from the following four viewpoints: personal experiences in childhood and the present, functions and diversity of personal networks, various social consciousnesses, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Using data from the Prosociality and Personal Network 2023 (PPN2023) survey of mothers of elementary and middle school students, we analyzed the sociological background of prosocial behavior in terms of the above four aspects. The main findings are as follows: 1) Those who saw adults around them support others in their childhood and those who received support from others themselves are more likely to engage in prosocial behavior. 2) Regardless of whether the relationship with network members is positive or negative, the more they interact with a variety of others and the more tolerant they are of different others, the more they engage in prosocial behavior. 3) The more one trusts oneʼs partner and the stronger oneʼs expectations for the communal nature of the community, the more one will behave in a prosocial manner. 4) The strength of the association between trust in others and prosocial behavior does not show systematic differences by the status or ability of the other person. 5) Experiences of not being helped by others and competitive and oppressive relationships with others do not inhibit prosocial behavior. 6) The fewer the number of people whom one can ask for help, the more oneʼs prosocial behavior is inhibited. 7) Tolerance toward others with different objective status is more related to prosocial behavior than tolerance toward others with different senses. 8) Attributional factors are not well correlated with prosocial behavior. Because all of the above findings were obtained only from correlations between two variables, it is necessary to reconsider the relationships between variables through multivariate analysis. In addition, given the various limitations of the PPN2023 survey, the findings need to be reconfirmed using survey data from a random sampling of a wider range of subjects. Our future research will address these issues.
