This study reviewed the existing research on educational desire in China. Educational desire refers to the phenomenon where families and individuals seek a higher level and quality of education, a process which leads to intense competition for educational opportunities. In July 2021, China implemented the so-called “Double Reduction Policy,” aimed at alleviating academic burdens on parents and children through homework reduction and regulations on extracurricular tutoring. This educational reform arose in response to the intense competition for educational success and social status, which led families to invest heavily in education. However, recent research has shown that educational desire among Chinese families persists. The study first examined the social context in China, referencing the educational situations in South Korea and Japan, and, in particular, drawing on definitions of “educational fever” from South Korea. Next, the study reviewed research related to educational desire in China, categorizing the studies into six perspectives: “cultural foundation,” “family background,” “rural areas and migrant workers,” “educational expectations of mothers,” “declining birthrate,” and “studying abroad.” Educational desire among ethnic minorities was also discussed within the review study. The review study highlighted how the historical tradition of competitive examinations, such as the imperial examination, underpins educational intensity in China. It explored parental expectations and aspirations related to family backgrounds, as well as the educational aspirations of children from rural areas who face access challenges related to the household registration system. The study also discussed the impact of mothersʼ educational expectations and the implications of the declining birthrate on education. The study found that there is a growing body of research focused on the implications of recent educational reforms, including the Double Reduction Policy. Future studies should consider comparative research on similar phenomena in other regions to contribute to theories such as meritocracy and parentocracy. The globalization of education, including the trend of studying abroad, presents significant opportunities for further investigation.
