This study investigates the participation of family and relatives in elderly care, the living arrangements of the elderly, and their family relationships through questionnaire and interview surveys of elderly people who migrated from Northern Vietnam (mainly those who immigrated in 1954). Four main points were revealed. First, nearly 90% of the elderly live with their children or their children’s families, reflecting how deeply the idea of “filial piety” has taken root. Second, more than 70% of the elderly in Vietnam today choose to live at home rather than in nursing homes or other elderly care facilities, indicating that most Vietnamese are reluctant to live in such institutions. Third, from a gender perspective, unlike Japan, where gender role divisions are prominent, Vietnam shows a flexible approach. Care rotation occurs in rural areas in the north, and in two cases from Ho Chi Minh City examined in this study, two sons took turns caring for their mother, while a daughter with a professional career and a relative of hers also provided care. Fourth, when studying immigrants from the North, it is necessary to consider their historical backgrounds.
