The suffix -kan, one of the affixes that form transitive verbs, has a number of functions, such as causative, topical, benefactive, and instrumental, but there is a group of verbs with the suffix-kan added that do not fall into any of these functions. Sneddon et al. (2010), who describe the standard grammar of Indonesian, classify the group as the “optional” suffix -kan verbs, and find that the meaning of the verb does not significantly change whether the -kan suffix is present or not. In addition, in active sentences, the object following the verb in both cases is considered to be the paient of the acion. Verbs that fall into this category include “teach,”“guide,” “give,” “send,” “state,” and “sing. Some of these verbs can take double objects, and in passive sentences, the presence or absence of the suffix -kan depends on whether the subject is the patient of the action or the recipient (Sneddon et al. 2010, Moeliono et al. 2017). In practice, however, we often find cases that differ from the above norms even in formal domains of language use, where adherence to standard grammar is expected. Additionally, differences are also found among verbs. Is this because the norms have changed and diverged from the actual usage? And is the optional suffix -kan simply optional without carrying any particular function? To answer these questions, it is necessary to examine how the optional suffix -kan is used in actual language use. This paper will explore the usage of verbs with and without the optional -kan suffix in Kompas, a major daily newspaper in Indonesia, and will consider how often these forms appear and whether there is any distinction in their usage.
