Abstract
This article presents an integrated approach to teaching Thai language through literature and translation as a foundation, based on a study of third- and fourth-year Japanese students majoring in Thai at Osaka University. The authors collaboratively designed the curriculum for the Thai Literature course and the Thai-Japanese Translation course for the first semester of the 2024 academic year, with an emphasis on integrated, task-based learning to support practical application. In the Thai Literature course, students study Khun Chang Khun Phaen, a well-known piece of Thai folk literature that has influenced the language, society, and culture of Thailand. In the Thai-Japanese Translation course, students practice translating from Thai to Japanese, using picture books and related children's literature as media for translation exercises. Subsequently, students integrate knowledge from both courses to conduct activities where they read Thai stories and introduce aspects of Thai culture to local kindergarten and early elementary school students. This serves as an example of teaching Thai in a coordinate model and simultaneously exemplifies instruction that emphasizes practical work to create collaborative output tasks.
