Abstract
Particle-laden flow including finite-sized particles with the particle–wall and interparticle radiative heat exchange is simulated in two dimensions with temperature distribution over the surfaces, and the effect of surface-to-surface radiation on particle motion by buoyancy is studied. The surface-to-surface radiative energy exchange is considered by solving the radiative transfer equation with an original discretization method near the fluid–solid interface. In the present study with transparent fluids, the radiative heat flux is described as a source term at the fluid–solid interface and the coupled effect of conduction and radiation is studied. The method is applied to two-dimensional sedimentation problems of a single, a pair and a total of 55 hot particles in an enclosure. Within the range of parameters employed, radiative energy exchange promotes homogenization of the temperature distribution together with (intraparticle and interfacial) conduction, and eventually alters the motion of the particles and the flow structure. The simulation results highlight the effect of radiative energy transfer in a two-phase flow including finite-sized particles coupled with heat conduction and fluid motion.
