Eating Disorder Tendencies among University Students : Emotional Factors and Support Needs

This study investigated eating disorder tendencies，associated emotional states，and support needs among university students，and examined appropriate supports. A web-based questionnaire survey involving students of University A based on the Japanese version of Eating Attitudes Test-26 examined problem awareness and willingness to improve eating behaviors，as well as emotional aspects and support needs related to eating behaviors. A total of 107 participants，with a mean age of 20.9±1.4 years and mean BMI of 19.9±1.9 ㎏/m2 were included. Statistical and qualitative analysis revealed that 12.2% of participants displayed tendencies toward eating disorders. Furthermore，significant differences in problem awareness and willingness to improve eating behaviors were observed between those with and without such tendencies. Participants with the former desired opportunities to learn coping strategies from peers in similar situations and reported that issues in eating behaviors adversely affected their daily functioning. It is important to consider early intervention strategies for university students with tendencies toward eating disorders, such as providing accurate information on eating disorders and creating platforms that allow students to share information while preventing the spread of misinformation.
