This article reconsiders British appeasement of Germany in the 1930s through a reconstruction of Neville Chamberlainʼs vision of European order. While historians have thoroughly explored the domestic, imperial and strategic reasons behind the Prime Ministerʼs decisions, they have paid less attention to his ideas of a future Europe. To elucidate this aspect, the article contrasts Nevilleʼs vision with that of his half-brother, Sir Austen. While the Foreign Secretary in the late 1920s envisioned a ʻreciprocalʼ order that would integrate Germany into a cooperative framework to uphold Europeʼs territorial status quo, Neville aimed for a ʻjuxtaposedʼ order, where a fortified Britain and an expanded Germany would coexist without mutual guarantees of Europeʼs status quo.
