Abstract
This study introduces a unified topology optimization (TO) framework capable of handling dynamic mechanical contact with interfacial friction between deformable bodies. The approach leverages a hybrid material point method (MPM), whose mathematical structure closely parallels that of classical finite element analysis, enabling a natural and consistent extension of well-established TO formulations. Through the MPM mapping operation, the framework accurately captures contact dynamics and provides a robust stick–slip formulation of Coulomb friction. Sensitivities are computed using the adjoint method with automatic differentiation, and optimal configurations are iteratively updated via the method of moving asymptotes. The compliance minimization of a three-point bending setting and the energy minimization of a contacting body demonstrate that the proposed framework remains robust for complex dynamics with large, time-evolving changes in contact interfaces and with frictional responses that directly influence overall deformation behavior. The robustness of the present framework is further demonstrated through its successful extension to fully three-dimensional settings. These results convincingly demonstrate that the hybrid MPM-based TO substantially advances structural optimization by directly incorporating dynamic contact with friction, thereby providing a unified framework for designing energy-dissipating compliant mechanical systems and devices.
