Regarded as "innovative Islam making a contribution to global peace", hizmet (Turkish for service), emerged from the Republic of Turkey where it was defined as religious beneficence by the spiritual leader F. Giilen. Hizmet has attracted attention recently because it has grown by involving a widening circle of Muslim, whose competitive pursuit of virtue prompted citizens to make contributions to society and the world. The content of hizmet today can be summarized as educational service and inter-cultural communication, and the method is also summarized as a balance between local and universal, and effective strategy. These hizmets are united in loosely defined network by annual Giilen Conference: exchanging know-how and general policy. This mechanism dictates the potentiality of holistic hizmet. This paper demonstrates the innovative nature of hizmet. It has grown paradoxically, drawing in adjacent social relations by relying on religious tradition, but also adapting to contemporary society.
