Abstract
This study examines the background of two Buddhist versions of the three Karen history books published in the last decade of British colonial rule in Burma, by focusing on a dispute on the description“savage Karen” that appeared in Thuriya, a Burmese newspaper of the day, in the fi rst half of 1929. U Pyinnya’s Kayin Yazawin (Karen Chronicle) and U Saw’s Kuyin Maha Yazawin-dawgyi (Kuyin Great Chronicle) published in late 1929 and 1931, respectively, are regarded as the fi rst ethnic self-assertions by Buddhist Karens, the ethnically silent section of the population compared with the socially vocal Christian Karens. Analysis on the dispute shows how and why the Buddhists have become ethnically conscious at this point in Burmese history.
