The Wenchuan Earthquake occurred in Sichuan Province of P.R. China at 14:28 of 12th May 2008. The earthquake brought various social issues to surface for the rapidly changing P.R. China where receiving attentions from international society. Sichuan is located in Western China and is known for its recent rapid economic development as well as ancient civilization and world heritage. The timing of the earthquake was critical as it occurred three months before the 2008 Beijing Olympics which success appeal to international society was the Government’s top priority. This article reviews the China’s disaster response policy historically, summarizes China’s response to the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake in Sichuan, as well as that in following 3 years, and identify issues. The identified issues include reconstruction process, volunteerism, civil society movement, government response, media policy. During the three years, many things were done and many goals might have achieved but there are still many unsolved problems such as providing safe permanent housing and how authority respond to the anxiety of people, creating new jobs, long-term support for physically-disabled, long-term psychological care and mental support and reaching acceptable investigation result of the school corruption. Chinese Government used the recovery from the earthquake for propaganda campaign of the success of the 60th Anniversary of New China on 1 October 2009, and of the Communist Party as celebrating its 90 years anniversary on 20 July 2011. These issues would all reflect to understand contemporary Chinese society.
