Abstract	Kakusho Tachibana（1900-1978） was a Japanese psychologist and gerontologist born in Osaka. In this article, we reviewed the history of psychology of aging and gerontology in Japan by following Tachibana’s signifi cant contributions to the fi elds. He conducted research in psychology of aging from 1925, and has been known as one of the pioneers in the fi eld. He participated in the establishment of the Japan Socio-Gerontological Society in 1958, and encouraged the active role of social sciences in gerontology. Unfortunately, after he passed away, no psychologist followed in his footsteps. In conclusion, we discussed his legacy.
