The effect of intimacy of self-disclosure on interpersonal attraction : A longitudinal research focused interpersonal orientation of disclosure-recipient

This longitudinal research investigated the effect of intimacy of self-disclosure on interpersonal attraction with focus on disclosure-recipient's interpersonal orientation. Seventy-four national university students (male 25, female 49) completed questionnaires in April and July. Self-disclosure, interpersonal attraction, and interpersonal orientation were measured in April. In July, self-disclosure and interpersonal attraction questionnaire was administered. The targets of analysis were 65 freshmen (male 20, female 45) out of the 74 undergraduates. The Pearson's correlation analyses between self-disclosure and interpersonal attraction were conducted. The students were further divided into 2 groups (high and low) based on their interpersonal orientation, and correlation analyses by group were done. The results were as follows. 1) Long-term self-disclosure had positive effect on interpersonal attraction. 2) There was a curved-relationship between intimacy of self-disclosure and "communication" factor of interpersonal attraction. 3) Participants who had high interpersonal orientation were more sensitive to self-disclosure than those who had low interpersonal orientation.
