Professor Chiyoe Yamanaka was born in Osaka in 1923. He entered the department of aero nauties of Osaka Imperial University after the Kobe first junior high school and Konan high school. Since the department of aero nauties has been closed after the World War II, he moved to the department of electrical engineering and finished the graduate course. Then he was hired as an assistant professor of Osaka University at the School of Engineering and stayed as a researcher at MIT, USA in 1953. In 1960 laser was invented. He immediately started research using lasers and became a professor in 1963. His dream was to create the laboratory of the world. His research includes CO₂ and glass lasers. He also started laser fusion research and was successful to create fusion neutrons in 1971. In 1972, a Facility of Laser Engineering was founded in the School of Engineering, Osaka University. In 1976 Institute of Laser Engineering was founded. In 1983, GEKKO XII glass laser system has been constructed. During these years he produced world leading scientific achievements contributed to advance the laser fusion research. The recent worldwide target has been to attain the breakeven of the energy balance at implosion. The latest exciting results are a neutron yield of 10¹² per laser shot by subjecting a novel, large high aspect ratio target (LHART) to 10 kJ laser radiation from the GEKKO Ⅻ glass laser, and also the imploded fuel density of 1000 g/cm³ by using a deutrated plastic shell target at the ILE(Institute of Laser Engineering),Osaka. Related topics include the FIREX Program(Fast Ignition Realization Experiment) aiming at a fast ignition of an imploded fuel by using petta watt laser at the ILE,OSAKA. In the last few decades, inertial confinement fusion research has advanced remarkably, fueling hopes of inertial fusion energy as a new energy source for humankind in the 21 st century. The present key issues of inertial fusion energy(IFE) research are the development of high power driver systems including laser materials, components and new technologies of irradiation, as well as the processing of advanced fuel pellets and the fuel supply systems 、which enable the ignition to achieve an optimal IFE research pellet gain greater than 100 . Last but not least is the feasible design of the IFE reactor for the commercial use. Looking back over the last decades ，a detailed overview of ILE research activities on the inertial fusion energy, is introduced in hopes that ingenious young people may be stimulated by the challenging spirit of bone runners and the infinite possibilities of laser energy system.
