Abstract	In this paper, we report the present situation of health and physical education in Japanese universities. The conference of general education in national universities was hosted on May 29 and 30, 2008. Of the participating universities, ten national universities participated in the subcommittee meeting, titled “The ideal way of the subject of the health and physical education in the general education program in the future.” In the meeting, the following three points were mainly discussed: (1) the purpose of health and physical education on general education, (2) the characteristic contents and efforts, and (3) the ideal approach in the future. As a result of the investigation and discussion, it was found that health and physical education has become a required subject on all the participating universities, and its importance was confirmed in the different viewpoint from the past.
