Abstract
イギリスの詩人William Wordsworthとアメリカの自然文学者Henry David Thoreau は，近年の環境文学批評（ecocriticism）の観点から意義深い比較考察の対象となる。両者とも山岳や未開地への旅の中で，日常的認識の枠組みが覆される体験をし，その体験を作品化するが，そこに現代の新唯物論（the New Materialisms）や物質的環境批評（material ecocriticism）が問題とする自然の物質性の問題が顕在化しているからである。この論文では，主にワーズワスの自伝詩The Preludeと，ソローの紀行文学The Maine Woods の第1 章“Ktaadn” を取り上げ，両作品が，アルプスやクターディン山の圧倒的風景を自然の他者性ととらえ，そこに自然の物質的存在を認識する可能性を示唆していたことをKate Rigby やSerenella Iovino and Serpil Oppermannらの環境文学批評の観点から読み解く。さらに，自然物の能動的作用（nature’s agency）という現代環境批評の概念が，ワーズワスとソローに共有されていたことを示唆する。
