In the 90s to 2000s, survivors of the Military Sexual Slavery/Wartime rape by the Imperial Japanese Army came forward, demanding an official apology and legal compensation from the Japanese government. This movement gained widespread support throughout the world. We call this the “testimony period”. The problem is still at issue, but the survivors have passed away one by one. Most of the last remaining survivors have lost much of their physical strength. Now many young people, especially in Asia, are starting to take over this movement, replacing the survivors. Many Japanese, however, even if liberal intellectuals who are not historical revisionists, regard this “post-testimony” movement as anti-Japanese Nationalism. Is that really correct? Is it not too rough an understanding of the diversity of situation in each country and region? Through interviews of youths in Mainland China and Hong Kong, this paper discusses the social context of their participation in the movement, how they understand the survivors’ messages, and the previous work of the former movement. In Japan, when this issue is discussed, the media and most intellectuals talk only about the Korean movement. Of course Korean survivors and supporters have been doing good work. But the issue, “Military Sexual Slavery/Wartime rape by the Imperial Japanese Army” is widespread in Asian and other countries and regions. So the report in the present paper on cases in Mainland China and Hong Kong may help us to understand the diversity of the movement.
