Usefulness of ICT to Improve Expressiveness in the Dance Creation Process

This study examines the usefulness of information and communications technologies (ICT) in a contemporary dance class to enrich students’ physical expressiveness and cultivate their imaginative and creative abilities in Liberal Arts at university. We held a contemporary dance seminar, and administered a questionnaire survey to students. At the end of the semester, the students completed the questionnaire, which was designed to assess their perception of the usefulness of ICT in their classwork. Approximately 80% of students responded that the use of ICT helped them improve their dance techniques and enabled them to better share choreography ideas. We also conducted a textmining analysis in order to understand what students learned and their impressions of the seminar. We established three categories in order to define student focus in the class: “observe one’s own dance movements on camera,” “dance with others,” and “dance consciousness.” Regarding student learning and impressions, we created seven categories: “interest created by a remote class,” “dance expression,” “experience using the body,” “feelings about the dance performance,” “choreography,” “dance movements,” and “transmission.” We thus observed that ICT can be used in dance education to objectively confirm a student’s movements, both during class time and at home. Further, the students were able to receive advice from overseas dance teachers in real time. This study suggests that using ICT to enhance dance instruction can improve students’ dance expressiveness, and foster new ways to express their creativity.
