This paper examines chapter 4 of The Gilded Age by situating it as Twain’s earliest attempt to fictionalize his own experiences on the Mississippi River. This chapter impressively depicts the great loss of life caused by a steamboat explosion. This is based on the real accident in which Twain's brother lost his life. By comparing the story with Life on the Mississippi, whose account is almost faithful to the facts, we can understand how Twain dealt with his own trauma in the form of fiction. The steamboat explosion and its aftermath can be viewed as the archetypal image revealing Twain's guilt-ridden conscience, recognizable throughout his writings. This paper also suggests that the disaster depicted here might reflect the tragedy of the Civil War that ended Twain's career on the river and involved him in the unjustifiable Southern cause.
