We can read the Myth of the Ages in Ovid Metamorphoses 1 and 15. In the Myth of the Ages generally human beings make a habit of killing and eating animals through the ages. In the Myth of the Ages of Ovid Met. 1, there seems to be no description of making that habit, but I think that Ovid supposed that habit when he described the Myth of the Ages in Met. 1 because he had read Virgil and Aratus and he himself described it in Met. 15 through Pythagoras’ speech. In Pythagoras’ speech, killing and eating animals are related to cannibalism. In Met. 1, Lycaon killed a captive and attempted to make Jupiter eat the meat of that captive after the description of the Myth of the Ages. Through the Myth of the Ages and Lycaon’s tale, Ovid intended to describe the relationship between eating animals and cannibalism.
