Abstract
This article is conceived as a teaching material to be used in the author’s course of introduction to North Indian classical music (Hindustānī music) at Osaka University. Indian Music is explained in a manner as plain as possible, avoiding the use of technical terms of musicology, so that those students who have felt weak in learning the notation system of Western music at schools can obtain a better access to music in this seminar. First, the aesthetical theory of Rasa (taste/feeling) is explained, focusing on its origin in Indian classical dramaturgy and poetics. Next, the notion of Rāga (melodic pattern) is explained in connection to the Rasa theory and dramaturgy. In fact, music can be considered a sort of minimalistic theater consisting of sounds. Thereafter, the notion of Tāla (rhythmic cycle) is explained referring to the Indian religious concept of transmigration. At the same time, the arithmetic aspect of rhythm is dealt with, mentioning ancient Indians’ favoritism for permutations and combinations, and probability. At last, song texts composed in South Asian languages, especially those of synthetical nature of Hinduism and Sufism, that are to be practiced in the course, are linguistically analyzed.
