The purpose of this paper is to clarify the effects of the start of Electric train operation in the Keihanshin area on the Tokaido / Sanyo Main Line in the 1930 s on the performance of private railway companies. The results are as follows. The commencement of Electric train operation by state-owned railway was putting pressure on the performance of private railway companies competing with state-owned railway. To this end, private railway companies jointly developed an opposition movement and tried to stop Electric train operation by state-owned railway, but did not succeed. The companies challenged the state-owned railway, focusing on fares and driving speeds. On the other hand, the cooperation of private railway companies, which had not progressed in even in hard times due to the reaction of excess investment during the boom of World War I, started moving in the direction of realization with the start of train operation of the national railway.
