Abstract
全国の高齢者施設の中には、初詣に行けない施設利用者（以下、利用者）のために正月期間に限って設置された職員手製の神社がある。本稿ではこのような神社を「高齢者施設内特別設置（特設）神社」（以下、特設神社）と称し、作成の経緯や現状、利用者や職員の反応などについて、実態調査とインターネットを利用した調査を行い、その概要と、利用者へどのような役割を果たしているかを考察した。施設利用者が初詣に行けない要因として①利用者の体調・介護度、②施設の人員・設備、③神社の環境・設備、④季節・天候、の4点が判明した。特設神社は、家庭祭祀と神社の要素を兼ねたものであり、施設内で季節感や刺激が少なく受動的な生活を送っている利用者に身体や認知機能の維持、二次的障害の予防に加え、楽しんでもらうことで生活の質の向上を図るという効果がある。また、健康で平穏な生活が続くよう予祝的な意味合い、自然や祖先とのつながりを感じさせる役割も包含していることが明らかになった。
Some Japanese care facilities set up temporary Shinto shrines for their disabled elderly who cannot visit real shrines during the New Year’s holidays. We conducted an internet survey of such staff and some of the disabled elderly residents to understand their circumstances and reactions. Factors that prevented the elderly from visiting real shrines on New Year’s included: (1) physical conditions and nursing requirements, (2) facility personnel and equipment, (3) the environment and equipment of Shinto shrines and (4) the cold season and weather. Institutionalized elderly tend to grow irritated in the environment of the care facility and lose track of the seasons. We found that temporary shrines revitalize residents, giving them peace of mind through a sense of interconnection with their ancestors, seasons, and nature. Temporary shrines inspire greater awareness, improve or maintain mental and physical functions, prevent secondary disabilities, and help them enjoy life.
