Crip Theory

In this paper, we attempt to introduce the theoretical trend of disability studies since the 2000s, which have been widely unknown in Japan until now. Therefore, in section 2 of this paper, we review some characteristics of the new interdisciplinary approaches, called critical disability studies (CDS). Consequently, we traced part of the development of disability studies after CDS in the following two sections. In section 3, we present an overview of the series of studies on the crip theory that has emerged as a result of the intersection of the queer theory and disability studies. In section 4, we discuss the materialistic approach to disability (impairment) that attempts to directly describe not only the potential for social change but also for physical change. In conclusion, we summarize the problems that contemporary disability studies have been tackling from the perspective of how to overcome the dichotomy of discourse and body or theory and practice.
