Review and Consideration of Trends toward Self-Pluralism in Late Modernity and Identity Theory

This article reviews the tendency toward self-pluralism in late modernity and identity theory. In late modernity, due to changes in economic structure, the development of technology, and the diversification of values, there has been a tendency to distinguish between different selves depending on the situation. By contrast, past studies, including Erikson’s identity theory, have shown that self-pluralism is an obstacle to mental health. However, empirical research has shown that some adolescents are able to form an identity and maintain their mental health despite selfpluralism. In late modernity, when the self tends to be pluralistic, identity has become more important for the effective management of self in changing circumstances. In recent years, there has been a variety of research on supporting adolescents’ identity from the perspective of “ibasyo.” Since there have been few studies focusing on self-pluralism and identity, further research is needed.
