Girls’ Education and Mass Media in the Early Showa Period : From Interviews with Graduates of Secondary education for girls（Koto-Jogakko） and Women’s Colleges in the Kansai Region

How did women who were highly educated before the war, when the educational opportunities they received were limited, recognize the Japanese society and what kind of life did they have? In order to examine women’s life histories during the turbulent times, from the 1930s to the fascist period to the defeat, interview surveys administered to older women who were educated and presumed to have been familiar with print media. By conducting a multifaceted content analysis of popular womenʼs magazines, the author comprehensively depicts the virtual worldview that womenʼs magazines presented to readers, and the relationship between readers and the media. In this article, the author will focus on girlsʼ education and the relationship between girls with mass media / popular culture such as commercial magazines, books, and movies, and organize “narratives” about the life histories we have heard.
