Abstract
This paper revisited concealed question noun phrases ( CQNPs) previously analyzed by N-semantics, an established paradigm of semantics and pragmatics of noun phrases. N-semantics classified them into standard and non-standard CQNPs. For standard CQNPs, N-semantics claimed that such an NP generally conceals a specificational wh-question. I reported that there are Japanese CQNPs headed by particular nouns concealing polar or alternative questions, which may have never been reported in any language, thus refuting the generalization by N-semantics. For non-standard CQNPs, I showed that this category is not coherent since there are various counterexamples against the proposed criteria, suggesting that this category is merely a garbage can for the exceptions to the proposed generalization of standard CQNPs. Reference File Theory, a recent alternative to N-semantics, can characterize features of "non-standard" CQNPs in terms of reference file IDs and attribute values consisting of content.
