Abstract
Although Sylheti language, spoken in the northeastern part of Bangladesh, is considered a dialect of Bengali, its distinctiveness is so conspicuous that speakers of standard Bengali cannot easily understand Sylheti. In addition, it has its own alphabet, Sylheti Nagri, which has a quite long literary tradition of several centuries but is now obsolete in use. 95 percent of the immigrants of Bangladeshi origin in the United Kingdom are said to be Sylhetis, i.e. Sylheti-speaking people. Since the 70s, movements to promote Sylheti language and to revive Sylheti Nagri began among Sylheti people settled in the UK. Probably in concert with these movements abroad, cultural awareness about Sylheti language and Sylheti alphabet seems to be also gradually raised in Sylhet area of Bangladesh since around 2018. This article analyzes Sylheti people's identity currently in the making, comparing the movements in the UK and those in Sylhet.
