This essay introduces a case study on an intermediate level Filipino language class and how movie clips on the internet, typically found in official YouTube websites of mass media, artists, civil organizations, etc, can be effectively utilized in the context of online classes in the COVID-19 pandemic situation. The essay begins with general background on certain problematic aspects of finding appropriate practical educational materials for those students who have already finished basic course on the grammar, in the present context of the curriculum in School of Foreign Studies, Osaka University. It then explains the unique difficulty the learners of Filipino language often face in relation to the problematic local issues related to the Filipino language as the national language along with English as an official language which is also the globally most competitive lingua franca. It is followed by the general situation online about how more and more attractive materials are recently beginning to be accessible for that specific purpose, accelerated by the COVID situation. The essay then explains how the author led the suddenly introduced online based Filipino class by making use of these online YouTube movies and demonstrates how it can be very effective in the context of online learning.
