Abstract
This paper explores the definition of derivatives in Russian language dictionaries and demonstrates their usefulness from a practical and theoretical perspective, depending on levelbased language learning. Several types of dictionaries — explanatory and derivational — were used to compare various descriptions. It has been argued that word derivation is sometimes clearly explained, while in other cases, explanations are disputable. Moreover, it has been indicated that disputable explanations could be a suitable teaching material for learners of comparatively highlevel language.
