Abstract
This paper examines movement verbs in Japanese that display their goal, based on the Situation Semantics, advocated by Barwise and Perry(1983). To characterize the meaning of these verbs, the interpretation of their time-adverbial phrase and the feature of their goal should be required. These requirements will be satisfied by observing and describing the situation where proper states of affairs stand before/after movement and its circumstance. The main verbs discussed here are tsuku(to arrive), shuppatsu-suru(to depart), modoru(to return),kaeru(to go home), kuru(to come) and iku(to go). The main findings of this paper are the following: 1. Movement verbs that display both their source and goal have distinctive features on their goal. 2. The features are of three types: goal's attribute, situation after movement and its circumstance.
