Abstract
Witt’s gender essentialism treats gender as an Aristotelian essence of social individuals. This perspective appears to explain the transgender experience by suggesting that trans people experience a lack of unification as social individuals. However, this view is implicitly connected with the assumption that there is no gap between the evaluative and motivational aspects of social norms, though this gap is crucial to explain the transgender experience. This paper explains how this assumption from Witt’s theory can be discarded and how the modified version of it can be employed to account for the transgender experience.
