Amid expanding support for school non-attendance, the number of children and students who are not attending school continues to increase, and their backgrounds and prognoses are growing more complicated. The goal of school non-attendance support should not be the return to school but the mental and financial independence of those who have experienced this phenomenon. As such, those who have experienced school non-attendance should be supported toward accepting and giving a positive meaning to their own experience of the non-attendance. Therefore, in this study, we conducted semi-structured interviews with those who experienced school non-attendance. We also explored, using the Kawakita Jiro method(Kawakita,1967), how those who have experienced school non-attendance define their own experience. Results of the analysis showed that those who have experienced school non-attendance held “a negative meaning,” “a positive meaning,” and “shifting feelings related to the experience of school non-attendance.” In addition, the participants noted the importance of not experiencing different treatment from others despite their school nonattendance as a trigger for switching from “a negative meaning” to “a positive meaning.” Lastly, one of the indicators of having “a positive meaning” was when the experience could be disclosed to others.
