Description
Since the 1960s–1970s, second-wave feminism has highlighted the problem that there is a fixed gender role division of labor and that domestic labor is unpaid. Now, the necessity of an economical evaluation of such unpaid work has been recognized internationally in response to such feminism. The origin of an evaluation of unpaid housework can be traced back to the beginning of modern times. This paper aims to clarify the discussion on unpaid domestic labor by housewives in the early modern era when the lifestyle of housewives was being established, focusing on what the “wages for wives” controversy that developed in Japan and the United States in 1926 reveals. Results of the analysis show that there was a questionable view about the situation that housewives’ domestic labor within the private sphere was unpaid and that housewives had to depend on husbands economically.
