Abstract	As infectious diseases caused by the COVID-19 virus have spread worldwide since January 2020, there have been time lags in the responses of national governments. In particular, compared to the Japanese government response, the Chinese government responder in a faster and tougher way. In the early days of the outbreak, with large numbers of infected people in China, Chinese residents in Japan received information from their home country and took preventive actions ahead of Japanese residents. In Japanese society during this time, the exclusionary attitudes toward Chinese people have become more obvious than before. In highlighting the thoughts and experiences of Chinese residents in Japan, who are living in the margins between the two nations during the COVID-19 outbreak, this study considers both current issues related to the COVID-19 outbreak and prospects for the future. Specifi cally, we conducted focus groups with Chinese international students living in Japan and collected the life stories of three Chinese individuals who work in Japan. The results indicate that Chinese residents in Japan have complex worries, that they have their own solutions in the midst of sudden changes, and that cognitive changes are occurring over time. Moreover, we found that the margin of Chinese residents in Japan was strengthened at the beginning, but later weakened over the course of the COVID-19 outbreak.
