Abstract
This paper explores the relationship between D. H. Lawrence’s 1915 novel The Rainbow and imperialism by examining the expanding dynamics that inform both the novel and empire, the text’s self-conscious description of the ‘whole’, the relation between individual and empire, Ursula as an ambivalent (and even contradictory) figuration of imperial ideology, Lawrence’s experiences as ‘a traveller on the face of the earth’. Contextualizing and historicizing the novel and opening up its textuality to the ‘world’, the paper demystifies and deconstructs the aesthetic symbolism of the rainbow, or ‘the world built up in a living fabric of Truth’.
