Abstract
The theory of literature propounded by Soseki Natsume, one of Japanʼs most renowned novelists, occupies a unique place in the history of Japanese aesthetics. This study attempts to (i) explain the foundation of this unique theory of literature and (ii) explicate its relation to moral issues, especially regarding literary writing. Soseki’s main ideas in this regard can be thusly summed up: consciousness exists as a continuous flow of sensations or impressions. The content and order of a conscious flow can to some extent be selected. Along with this selectivity, ideals of consciousness (or life) emerge; one such ideal is that of a literary person, which mainly aims to evoke emotions. This ideal is in turn split into different literary ideals and authors of novels in the new era following the Meiji Restoration—when they include moral elements in their works—should seek to harmonize two of these ideals, that is, naturalism and romanticism, which represent two opposing moral positions.
