Abstract	This paper ains to show the institutional changes in prison administration in the North-Western Provinces of British India until the time of the Indian Uprising of 1857. In British India, the basic policy of prison administration was not clearly defined until the Indian Prisons Act of 1870. Each provincial government experimented with various institutional designs. The North-Western Provinces, along with Lower Bengal, made pioneering attempts at reforming the prison system. After the Indian Uprising of 1857, the North-Western Provinces experimented with a progressive system in which the severity of the treatment of well-behaved prisoners was gradually reduced, and a system in which guards were selected from among these prisoners. However, the institutional changes in the earlier period and their impact on the post-Uprising prisons have not been adequately studied. This paper aims to fill this gap in research.
