This study examines the context and structure of a four-volume textbook, Tārīḵẖ-e Hind (first edition 1920-22; second edition 1939), written by Sayyid Hāshimī Farīdābādī (1890-1964). Farīdābādī wrote this history textbook a few years after he joined the Translation Bureau of the Osmania University in Hyderabad state. It was one of the first historical narratives written in Urdu prose in princely states under British rule. He considered the presence of Anjuman-e Taraqqī-e Urdū, led by Abdul Haq (1870-1961) in Aurangabad, of great importance. The reader can see a will to depart from the British colonial narrative in Farīdābādī's History of India. He criticised previous colonial historiographies written in English, for their judgement of Aurangzeb's personality or the causes and consequences of the so-called ‘Black Hole of Calcutta' incident. However, it is clear that Farīdābādī's historiography had to rely heavily on those colonial historiographies for historical sources and writing style. This paper shows that while his historiography relied on English sources and their writing styles, he prepared his readers with the means to deconstruct colonial narratives.
