Abstract
When I teach a “minor language” like Bambara, a lingua franca of Mali in West Africa, for just one semester, to students who are not necessarily eager to learn it, the aim would not be for them to gain facility in the language itself. I lecture on Bambara language from the viewpoint of linguistic typology and encourage students to compare it with languages that they already know, according to topics that are typologically interesting. The 10 topics from Bambara language I choose for lectures in class are; 1) the format of greetings, 2) copula sentences, 3) possessive sentences, 4) the basic word order, 5) possessive noun phrases, 6) order of adjective and noun, 7) case marking of nouns and pronouns, 8) types of adjectives, 9) passive constructions, and 10) relative constructions. These topics are especially interesting in Bambara grammar and also help students to understand languages from the perspective of linguistic typology.
